Visualization leveraging the human cognition proves to be an invaluable tool to explore, digest, analyze and communicate the information. We reveal patterns, trends, relations or dependencies that were buried before. But, what happens after we have created such an elaborate and powerful visualization and released it to the world? How does the it affect the beholder? How does it help shaping his opinions or even changing his behavior? Because, at the end of the day, visualization is simply a means to an end — a tool to achieve a bigger goal. We have agreed that visualization as an instrument for analysis and communication works. Now, let’s answer the question how visualization can make an actual impact on education, economics, politics, society and the digital revolution.

Barcode Plantage transforms a simple product bar code into a unique tree in the garden of globalization.

Once a bar code is keyed or scanned in, the program sends a request to a product database, which returns master file data. This master file data is then analyzed to define positions, curves and colors of Bezier curves of the tree structure.

The number of these curves will vary correspondence to the number of figures in the code. Simultaneously, the user will hear a melody, which is based on the figures of the bar code.

To complete the visualized information details of the country of origin, manufacturer, product number and sum - each on a single black bar connected by fine lines – are displayed. Since all data is being interpreted by an algorithm that works completely without any random aspect each product is represented by a characteristic and singular tree.

Impure is a visual programming language aimed to gather, process and visualize information. With impure is possible to obtain information from very different sources; from user owned data to diverse feeds in internet, including social media data, real time or historical financial information, images, news, search queries and many more. Impure is a tool to be in touch with data around internet, to deeply understand it. Within a modular logic interface you can quickly link information to operators, controls and visualization methods, bringing all the power of the comprehension of information and knowledge to the not programmers that want to work with information in a professional way.

The last Pop Sci invention award that we’ll share comes from MingZher Poh at MIT’s MediaLab. Using a webcam, he’s produced a mirror that can give you information about your vital signs.

The webcam reads reflection of light from your skin, which changes based on the amount of blood being pumped through it. That information can be used to monitor things like heart rate.

Lots of “future tech” concept videos contain this idea of a mirror that tells you your vitals. Well, here it is. It’s real.
